Last week we announced that we’ve been working with Cisco to integrate Riak KV with Mesos and then proceeded to demonstrate Riak KV running on Mesos at MesosCon. Cisco and Riak decided to tackle this challenge together because we have a mutual interest in delivering solutions to the marketplace that can scale reliably and efficiently.
Most followers of Riak are aware that Riak is increasingly being recognized as the NoSQL database of choice for enterprises with applications that must scalable globally, be always available, and operationally simple to support. At the same time, Cisco has been building out its’ Intercloud service offering to scale globally and utilize deployed compute resources efficiently.
Mesos provides a resource scheduling model and “common services” (like any operating system kernel) that enables the running of multiple services and applications across a cluster of machines in a datacenter or cloud. Thereby enabling applications to easily scale from one instance to thousands of instances in seconds or minutes. Mesos decides how many resources to offer each managed application, like Riak KV, and what to execute on available physical resources.
Riak KV running on Mesos provides Cisco customers a NoSQL database that is not only operationally efficient but also makes the best use of their Intercloud resources. The efficiencies of Riak and Mesos improve the cost basis for the Cisco Intercloud service offering and increasing customer satisfaction by creating an easy to consume data service for application developers. In addition, the entire community benefits as this work is fed into the open source project.
This work could not have been performed without the support of Mesosphere and their SDK for DCOS “the datacenter operating system”. DCOS is a powerful tool for large-scale data centers and large enterprise applications running on private or public cloud services and has proven invaluable in developing this Riak KV/Mesos framework. We are excited about the opportunity to work with Cisco and Mesosphere to create technology stacks that solve many of the challenges enterprises have integrating and scaling critical technologies.
Finally, I’d like to personally congratulate the Riak team for being the first to deliver this powerful framework. It demonstrates that industry leaders like Cisco and Riak are aligned around a vision of empowering enterprises to worry less about technology and more about leveraging data to drive better business outcomes.
