We started Riak Technologies with an idea as simple and timeless as an honest day’s work. Databases shouldn’t lose data. Sounds radical, we know, but some people think losing data is fine as long as they have cool coffee mugs. (By their own admission, these folks have built “databases” that run the risk of losing data if users issue a simple “kill -9” command.)
The Riak Fast Track has been around for at least nine months now, and lots of developers have gotten to know Riak that way, building their own local clusters from the Riak source. But there’s always been something that has bothered me about that process, namely, that the developer has to build Riak herself. Riak provides pre-built packages on downloads.riak.com for several Linux distributions, Solaris, and Mac OS/X, but these have the limitation of only letting you run one node on a machine.
Many thanks to commenter Mike for taking up the challenge I offered in my last post. The flaw I was referring to was, indeed, the possibility that Luwak would split one of my records across two blocks.
A few days ago, I announced a tool that I assembled last weekend, called luwak_mr. That tool extends Riak’s map/reduce functionality to Luwak files.
Those of you who are familiar with the Riak Wiki may have been surprised by what you saw at wiki.riak.com starting yesterday. That’s because we just gave it a facelift. More importantly, the team at Riak has spent a fair amount of time converting the Riak Wiki to use Gollum.
The community contributions to Riak have been increasing at an exciting rate. The pull requests are starting to roll in, and I wanted to take a moment and recognize several of the many contributions we’ve received over the past months and weeks (and days).
A short while ago I made it known on the Riak Mailing list that the Riak Dev team was working on getting “more resources out the door to help the community better use Riak.” Today we are pleased to announce that Riak Function Contrib, one of these resources, is now live and awaiting your usage and code contributions.
