Riak NoSQL database creator and developer awarded a position on UK Government’s latest list of preferred suppliers
London – 17 December, 2015 – Riak Technologies, the creator and developer of Riak®, the industry leading distributed NoSQL database software, has been awarded a position on the G-Cloud 7 list of pre-approved IT suppliers by the UK Government.
Riak provides reliable government-scale data management for IT infrastructure projects requiring vast capacity at a fraction of the operational cost of conventional database technologies. The NHS, the U.K. National Healthcare Services, specifically its electronic backbone, Spine 2, utilises the Riak® KV database software to connect over 20,000 clinicians and local service providers with necessary data including patient records, prescriptions and other medical information. Riak facilitated the provision of constant, reliable access to this information, which has driven efficiencies and improved patient care, contributing to an overall saving of over £20m in just over a year.
“The NHS is one of the world’s five biggest employers, and the Spine is its core IT system which is responsible for containing a central store of about 1.5 billion records and documents,” said Martin Sumner Technical Lead for the NHS. “We chose to use Riak’s Riak KV because we wanted to improve the capacity while reducing the cost of running Spine, but maintain availability and safeguard against data loss. So Riak’s focus on the operational aspects was, and is, highly important to us.”
G-Cloud 7 is part of the UK Government Digital Service’s ‘Digital Marketplace’ and functions as a resource for public bodies wanting to purchase commodity, cloud based IT services. Its aim is to provide public bodies with a directory of suppliers that will better enable them to implement technologies that increase public sector productivity and efficiency in a way that minimizes the time and financial expenditure ordinarily associated with acquiring individual procurement contracts. The process of evaluation and assessment is carried out by the Crown Commercial Service (CCS) using an open submissions system on an bi-annual basis
Riak is included under the category ‘Specialist Cloud Services’ for its distributed database software Riak® KV and cloud storage software, Riak® S2 with tools to connect its databases to Redis for in-memory caching and Spark for real-time analytics. These services provide the infrastructure to control and simplify Big Data. From early 2016, Riak’s new Riak TS (Time Series) database will also be available addressing the specific needs of Internet of Things data. Through these provisions, Riak provides advanced cloud services that can be utilised to great effect by the range of public sector bodies who procure through G-Cloud 7 for a diverse applications including healthcare, education and the civil service.
Riak has held a place on the G-Cloud list since 2014. The Company’s continued presence on G-Cloud allows other public bodies to efficiently implement a system which can provide significant improvements to vital public services.
