Groundbreaking digital experience quality analytics service is utilising Riak’s scalability, resilience and simplified operation
London – 26 April, 2016 – Riak Technologies, the creator and developer of Riak® KV and Riak® TS, the world’s most resilient NoSQL databases, today announced that Actual Experience has adopted Riak KV to power its pioneering cloud-based digital experience quality analysis service as part of a three-year, six-figure software and services agreement.
Actual Work, the cloud service provided by Actual Experience, scientifically analyses the end user’s digital experience quality. These insights go beyond technical measures such as packet loss to provide previously unreachable insights into the digital supply chain and how it affects quality. The analysis helps digital businesses continuously improve their digital supply chain ensuring it is fit for purpose. Media companies, airlines, financial institutions and broadband providers have all utilised the new service to improve user experiences, troubleshoot problems and target investment in digital products and services.
Its unique cloud service achieves this level of insight by gathering measurement data from the digital supply chain in real time, and analysing them using sophisticated proprietary algorithms. The core platform is underpinned by open source Riak KV, and because demand for the service is growing rapidly, Actual Work has now partnered with Riak and become a Riak KV Enterprise customer for multi data centre features and expert advice to hone performance and efficiency.
Actual Experience uses Riak KV to store all of its datasets, including raw measurement data and the results of its analysis. Martin Woods, CTO of Actual Experience explained why: “Riak is business critical. It’s right at the centre of what we do. We operate an ‘always on’ Analytics-as-a-Service, so we need to know that if something were to break in the database layer our service would remain operational. Riak is designed to just keep working if a disk or server goes down. It has proven to be robust and has never given us a reason to regret our decision.”
Actual Work provides powerful analytics that can be accessed via web and mobile applications. Customers can “slice and dice” vast datasets and analyse them on demand, and as such analytic results need to display quickly despite the amount of data being processed. When a user requests a view of the data it could require thousands of data points to be read from the database and processed. A Riak cluster serves them all to the customer on demand, while at the same time continuing to ingest new data in real time.
Actual Experience has doubled in size during the past 12 months, but simplicity of operations and scaling allowed its team to focus on implementing software features for customers rather than operations – the need for simplicity is exacerbated by the need to maintain both private cloud and shared services for customers. Riak KV became irreplaceable to Actual Experience due to the ease of operations and reliability that the platform provides: “We like the fact that Riak will just keep working in the event of a failure. There’s no master/slave approach – one node is equal to any other node.” said Woods, “Operations like it because they don’t have to do much. It doesn’t get much easier than Riak – we can join a new node to a cluster with a few commands.”
